Guwahati, Feb 11: On the 2nd day of Athletic events 19 years old Koch Rajbanshi athlete Swapna Burman bagged Silver Medal for India in the 12th South Asian Games, Guwahati-Shillong. She shared the 2nd position with Sri Lankan L.G.A.T. Vinodani with a record performance of 1.75m while the 1st position was held by Sahana Kumari with a record performance of 1.78m also representing India.
Hailing from a poor family, from a small village in Jalpaiguri district of North Bengal, whose father is paralysed and brother a daily wager has not stopped the young athlete from reaching heights. Swapna Burman is India’s current national record holder in women’s junior category (under-18), with performance record of 1.71m which she set in 2013 when she was just 16 years old. She broke the nine-year-old record of Kavya Muthanna.
Currently, the 19-year-old athlete has a high jump best of 1.78m. Swapna Burman was also the Open National champion, National Games winner and National junior champion in heptathlon in 2015. A silver at the 12th South Asian Games is another feather in her cap.
